We were thrilled to welcome the team from Urban Systems for a full day of volunteering at Wilks Place in Courtenay, a now completed 12-home Habitat housing project.

Under the summer sun, the team rolled up their sleeves and soft-washed 12 homes—a big task that they tackled in two shifts, with one crew taking on the morning and another in the afternoon. It was a hot day, but spirits were high, and a little splashing around with water made the hard work a lot more fun!

To keep everyone fueled, our friends at Mudsharks Coffee Bar donated delicious breakfast muffins, while Old Farm Market in Courtenay provided fresh sandwiches for lunch. The entire team came together midday for lunch and had the special opportunity to hear from Julia, a Habitat homeowner, who shared her story and journey with Habitat. Her words served as a reminder of why this work matters and how every act of support builds stronger communities.

Sarah Rebitt, a Community Consultant at Urban System who attended the team build, and had previously volunteered at the site, reflected on the day:

“It’s so inspiring to see how much work has been done at the site since I was here two years ago helping construct the fence. It’s always such a fun opportunity to get out of the office and into the community, and I’m so grateful to be able to take part in these Habitat Build Days.”
