Julia's Story
As Christmas approaches, we often reflect on what makes the season so special—the warmth of family, the joy of traditions, and the magic of home. This year, we have the privilege of sharing the journey of one of our newest Habitat homeowners, a story of dreams fulfilled, unexpected turns, and the beauty of a community coming together.
Meet Julia, who moved to Canada from Berlin, Germany, in 2008. After spending time in Squamish, Whistler, and Vancouver, Julia moved to the Comox Valley in 2013. She was drawn by the area’s slower pace of life and proximity to nature. She loves hiking, camping, sailing, and exploring all the outdoor adventures the valley offers.
Despite the beauty of their surroundings, Julia and Maya faced a challenge that many of us can relate to: finding a way to make the dream of homeownership a reality. “For years, owning my own home was a goal that felt out of reach,” she shares. Like many families, Julia had struggled with the rising cost of housing, unsure of how she and Maya could ever settle into a permanent home.
One day, a friend encouraged her to contact Comox Valley Mayor Bob Wells for resources that help people find affordable housing. He encouraged her to apply to Habitat for Humanity. At the time, Habitat was in the middle of a fundraising phase, so Julia didn’t expect to hear back immediately. But two months later, Habitat reached out with life-changing news: a home had become available, and Julia and Maya had the chance to become homeowners.
“The staff at Habitat have been nothing short of professional, encouraging, and dedicated. They helped guide me through every step of the journey,” she says. While the road to homeownership can be long and challenging, it was worth every moment for Julia.
“Owning a home gives us financial stability, which has been a challenge for us. But more than that, it gives us security, peace, and a sense of calm that we’ve never had before. I finally feel at home.”
For Julia, this Christmas is significant. She is celebrating the season with her daughter, and they’re doing so in their own home.
“Waking up in the comfort and peace of our place, knowing that we don’t have to leave again—it’s truly a blessing.”
Building Memories That Last
One of their favourite Christmas traditions is the German Advent Calendar. Each year, they eagerly count down the days until Christmas Eve. "It’s a tradition I brought with me from Germany, and now Maya loves it just as much as I do,” shares Julia. Their Advent Calendar has little surprises, from chocolates to small toys.
Julia and Maya are grateful this holiday season for the home they’ve found and the Habitat community that made it possible. “Anyone who works for Habitat has such a kind and caring heart,” she says. “This organization truly makes a difference in people’s lives.”
For Julia, this Christmas is about more than just celebrating the season—the sense of belonging, the security of home, and the joy of making new memories with her daughter. “I would recommend Habitat to any family looking for a solution to affordable homeownership,” she says. “This is an organization that changes lives, and I’m so thankful for everything they’ve done for us.”
"Owning our own home has been a goal of mine for years. What makes me smile is the way that my life story has unfolded. Most people's lives are quite linear in how they buy a house, get a dog, start a family, have kids, buy a boat etc. And for me, it has been the exact opposite way. I first adopted our dog Leeloo, then bought a sailboat, then had my daughter Maya, and now finally bought our house! What's next for us? I'm not too sure.." she chuckles.
The Gift of Home
As we reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, Julia and Maya’s story is a beautiful reminder that the greatest gift of all is the gift of home—of belonging, safety, and love. Their Christmas is a little brighter, warmer, and more special this year. We at Habitat for Humanity are honoured to be a part of their journey.
You can help more families like Julia's find affordable housing. Please consider leaving a gift this holiday season.
May your holidays be filled with the warmth of home, the joy of family, and the hope of new beginnings.
