Habitat for Humanity VIN Celebrates Transfer of Courtenay Property for Future Affordable Homes
Courtenay, BC - April 14, 2026 — After significant advocacy and collaboration, Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North (Habitat VIN) is celebrating the official transfer of land at 2140 Lake Trail Road from the City of Courtenay. The transfer marks a significant step forward in bringing new affordable homeownership opportunities to local families.

Originally identified for affordable housing in 2011, the property was transferred to Habitat VIN on April 14, 2026. The site is expected to support the development of three homes for families in need of safe, decent, and affordable housing.
“We’re thrilled to finally be in a position to move forward,” said Jeff West, Executive Director of Habitat VIN. “This moment represents years of persistence and partnership. With the land now in our hands, we can focus on what matters most: building homes and creating stability for families in our community.”
The City of Courtenay has also committed to offsetting municipal development cost charges, permit fees, and offsite servicing costs associated with the project, a contribution that helps defray a significant expense. The property itself, valued at $316,000, was transferred to Habitat VIN for a nominal fee of $1, demonstrating the City’s meaningful investment in affordable housing and strong commitment to supporting local families.
Habitat VIN acknowledges the leadership of the current Staff & Council in advancing the transfer and helping bring this long-standing project to fruition.
“This is an important example of what’s possible when we work together to address the housing crisis,” said West. “We’re grateful to Council for taking action to move this project forward and for their support in making affordable homeownership a reality in Courtenay. Having a building lot is an excellent start, allowing our focus to now shift to the critical work of fundraising for a build.”
The outcome reflects a shared commitment to the community and the growing need for affordable homeownership options in the Comox Valley.
Planning work will begin immediately, with more details about the development, timeline, and opportunities for community involvement to be announced as the project takes shape.
