Rod Olsen at the Comox Valley ReStore

Interview with ReStore Volunteer Rod Olson

Rod Olson has been volunteering at our Comox Valley ReStore for the past six months. We love his hardworking attitude and willingness to take on any tasks that come his way, and he loves the camaraderie he’s found with other volunteers and staff. Hear what he has to say about his volunteer experience. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved with the ReStore? “I am a retired teacher, and I grew up with two brothers in Saskatchewan, helping my father run a local hardware store. We learned how to carry, load and assemble items and to communicate effectively with customers. While living in Burnaby, I discovered the ReStore and was excited to find several supplies needed for our home. I was impressed by the level of volunteer engagement, and I decided I would one day like to be part of the organization. The icing on the cake was learning that Habitat for Humanity is a charity near and dear to my own heart. Upon moving to Courtenay in March 2022, I inquired about volunteering and have been involved for the past six months.” What do you do at the ReStore? "I assist with deliveries by unloading the truck, and I help maintain the cleanliness and safety of the yard. I also help customers by loading their purchases into their vehicles. Recently I have been helping out by stripping copper wire. Basically, I am ready and available for any tasks that come my way. Currently, I volunteer once weekly for 4 hours on Wednesday." What do you love most about the ReStore? "I enjoy the camaraderie with the other volunteers and staff. It’s a pleasant and fulfilling work environment. I would encourage anyone considering volunteering at the ReStore to do it. I also share information about the ReStore and Habitat for Humanity with my family and friends and hope they take advantage of all that it has to offer."
