A New Door Opens in Courtenay: Habitat Welcomes Jessica and Her Son Home

Holding a key in your hand may seem small—just a piece of metal. But on April 22nd, at 1375 Piercy Avenue in Courtenay, a single key meant everything. For Jessica and her son Keiran, it wasn’t just access to a front door—it was access to a new life, a safer future, and a dream long in the making. Read their story here.

At Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North, a Key Ceremony is more than a celebration—it’s a symbol. A symbol of community, resilience, and the belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live.

The ceremony began with a warm welcome to those who made this home possible: from the volunteers to the generous donors and sponsors who gave time, money, and heart.

“We are honoured to welcome Jessica and Keiran into their beautiful new home here in Courtenay,” shared Jeff West, Executive Director of Habitat VIN. “This milestone is a reflection of what we can achieve when a community comes together with compassion and purpose.”

Among the many voices that welcomed Jessica and her son home, MLA Brennan Day reminded us why we build,

“What you have helped create here isn’t just a structure but a foundation for the future, and most importantly, a home. Today is the result of determination, sacrifice, sweat equity, and generosity.”

Mayor Bob Wells added a touching sentiment of his own,

“The key we are celebrating today is more than a tool; it’s a symbol of hard work, of hope, and of a future filled with possibilities. It represents a fresh start, a foundation of memories yet to be made.”

Following the speeches, the ceremony paused for a silent prayer, led by Reverend Ingrid Brown from the Weird Church, to welcome and wish the best to the new homeowners.

Students from Queneesh Elementary share 'Meaning of Home' Entry

The crowd was moved when students from Mrs. Terri Fullerton's Montessori class at Queneesh Elementary School shared one of their 'Meaning of Home' entries—part of a national contest that raises both awareness and funds for Habitat's mission. Khrista, who authored the poem, was joined by her classmates, Ellis, Zyvyn, and Mallory, each taking a turn reading what 'home' means to them.

Khrista beautifully wrote:

“It's where we find a sense of self, where we find our place on the shelf. Home is where the heart is, they say. And that’s where I will always stay. It's where love and family reside, where we will always find a place to provide.

Symbolic Gifts

Coastal Community Credit Union, a long-time supporter of Habitat VIN, was also present. Erika Nessman, Area Manager, presented the family with symbolic items, including a toolbox donated by Midland Tools, ensuring they have the knowledge and tools to be successful homeowners.
